A used rental Yaris shouldn't be more than 10k. We all know how rentals are abused.

Also, I finally found out where the French cars went!

Supply and demand.

As long as new Toyotas don't have much incentive on them and dealers can snatch up former rental cars at the auction, clean them up, certified-pre-owned-icate them, and have customers paying them $2-$3k less than a comparable new one, that's what the market will command.

I don't know about the US, but in europe rental companies ditch their cars at the auctions after roughly six months, or before the first service is due. They end end up with larger dealers where they get a full detail, PDR if needed and a full service. They can actually be a pretty sweet deal. Friend of mine who works in R&D at BMW (the guy who let me drive an i8 a week ago) got an ex-rental Focus 3 years ago. Still drives it and says it purrs like a kitten. He said that with modern engine management systems it's virtually impossible to damage an engine by doing dumb stuff like revving it when cold etc.

My rental car had 64,000 kms on it.

Yeah, but these aren't Toyota CPO, and they're not 2-3k less, either. Maybe 0-2k less.

Enterprise only gives a 1-year/12k warranty, as opposed to the 7/100k warranty that actual Toyota CPO's get.

Year and a half.

Seems to be a different business model. European rental companies would never keep a car this long.

I was a bit surprised it was that old. But the bonus was they gave us a giant SUV when we only paid for a van, and a free tank of gas so I'm not complaining. I'd bet by the end of the year that car is gone.

Doesn't make sense.

But if for some reason people keep buying them at those prices, they'll keep selling them for that.
